Why people think it costs money
The paid-middleman myth
A whole industry of third-party “registration services” advertises paid SAM.gov help, and their sites often rank right alongside the real one. On top of that, once you register you may get official-looking calls, letters, and emails demanding a fee to “renew” or “activate” your registration. None of it is required, and none of it is the government.
What's actually free
- Creating your login.gov account, the federal sign-in SAM.gov uses.
- Registering your entity in SAM.gov.
- Getting your UEI, which is assigned inside registration rather than as a separate paid step.
- Renewing your registration every 365 days to stay active.
- Getting help from the official Federal Service Desk at fsd.gov.
How to spot a scam or paid middleman

- SAM.gov is always free. Ignore anyone demanding a fee to register, renew, or activate.
- Real government messages come from .gov or .mil addresses and will never ask you to pay to register.
- The only official sites are SAM.gov (registration) and fsd.gov (help); login.gov is the official sign-in.
- A paid service can fill out the forms for you, but you can do everything yourself for free, and you would still have to hand them your sensitive business information.
Free doesn't mean instant
The one honest catch: free is not the same as fast. The forms take about 1-2 hours, and after you submit, activation can take up to 10 business days while SAM.gov validates your entity (a manual review averaging about 4 business days is normal).
